The New Zealand flag: the Southern Cross on a blue ensign
The New Zealand flag is a British Blue Ensign, the Union Jack in the canton, with four five-pointed red stars edged in white on the fly representing the Southern Cross as it appears over the islands. It was adopted for government ships in 1869 by Governor Sir George Bowen, confirmed as the national flag by the New Zealand Ensign Act of 1902, and survived the 2015–16 referendums that offered a silver fern design in its place. The four stars are of different sizes and are not arranged symmetrically, which is where cheap copies go wrong; our New Zealand flag is printed through on woven polyester to the official construction sheet with the stars sized and placed correctly in the 1:2 proportion.
The New Zealand Silver Fern flag, a white fern frond on black, is the sporting flag of the All Blacks, the Black Caps and the Silver Ferns and the one most supporters wave; the Māori flag, the Tino Rangatiratanga, in black, white and red with the koru, was recognised as the national Māori flag in 2009 and flies on Waitangi Day; and the United Tribes flag of 1834 is the country’s first flag, still used in Northland.
The All Blacks, Waitangi Day and Anzac Day
In the UK the NZ flag is a rugby flag first: the All Blacks’ autumn tests at Twickenham, Murrayfield and the Principality, the Rugby World Cup, the Black Ferns, and the Kiwis in rugby league. Cricket follows with the Black Caps at Lord’s and the Women’s World Cup, then the America’s Cup, the Olympic rowers and sailors and Formula 1. Waitangi Day on 6 February is celebrated by the New Zealand community in London with a pub crawl on the Circle line and a hangi, and Anzac Day on 25 April brings the dawn service at Hyde Park Corner and the Cenotaph, both occasions for a New Zealand flag, a silver fern and hand flags for the crowd. Kiwi pubs, backpacker hostels and rugby clubs with New Zealand coaches fly one all year.
Which size New Zealand flag?
Pub fronts, garden poles and rugby-club bars mostly take the 5ft x 3ft New Zealand flag. A bedroom, shop window or smaller pole suits 3ft x 2ft; a club flagpole, an Anzac Day service or a stadium banner suits 8ft x 5ft; and 20x12in is the All Blacks fan’s car or hand-pole size. On every Southern Cross size the hoist is a sewn header with brass eyelets; the Kiwi DuraFlag can switch to rope and toggle or clips.
Flagtex or DuraFlag?
For a test-match weekend or a Waitangi Day party, Flagtex printed woven polyester does the job. For a flag flown daily outside a pub, a school or New Zealand House, DuraFlag offers a heavier knitted cloth with hems sewn twice and a reinforced header. Ordered before 2pm, the ensign goes out that day; Kiwi flags are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse.
New Zealand bunting
New Zealand bunting carries the ensign on rectangle or triangle pennants; Kiwi runs measure 3m, 5m, 9m or 20m in weatherproof polyester on strong tape. Silver Fern bunting suits a black-and-white rugby bar and Māori flag bunting suits Waitangi Day and Matariki. For an Anzac or Rugby Championship display, add Australia and South Africa bunting.
Hand flags and table flags
Rugby, the Anzac parade and airport arrivals: New Zealand hand flags are 9x6in and 18x12in on wooden sticks, joined by Silver Fern and Māori flag hand flags. The 6x4in New Zealand table flag on its base suits a bar counter, a travel agent or a classroom, with fern and Māori versions too, and a company reception gets the satin table flag on chrome. Cook Islands and Niue bunting live in this collection as well; Australia, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga are under world flags.
New Zealand flag FAQs
What is the difference between the New Zealand and Australian flags?
New Zealand has four red stars edged in white for the Southern Cross; Australia has five white stars plus a large seven-pointed Commonwealth Star under the Union Jack. Both are blue ensigns, which is why they are so often confused.
What do the stars on the NZ flag mean?
They are the four brightest stars of the Southern Cross constellation, Crux, as seen from New Zealand. The Union Jack in the canton reflects the country’s history as a British colony.
Did New Zealand change its flag?
No. Two referendums in 2015 and 2016 offered a black, white and blue silver fern design, but 56.6% voted to keep the current flag, which has been the national flag since the Ensign Act of 1902.
What is the black flag with the white fern?
The Silver Fern flag is New Zealand’s unofficial sporting flag, carried by All Blacks, Black Caps and Silver Ferns supporters. We have it as a full-size flag, bunting, a hand flag and a table flag.
What is the Māori flag?
The Tino Rangatiratanga flag, designed in 1990 in black, white and red with a koru, was recognised as the national Māori flag in 2009 and flies on Waitangi Day, 6 February, alongside the New Zealand flag.
What size New Zealand flag for a telescopic pole?
New Zealand flags at 5ft x 3ft fit a garden or 6m telescopic pole; a Kiwi 3ft x 2ft fits a short pole; and a fixed pole of at least 25ft takes the 8ft x 5ft.
