The Croatian flag: tricolour and šahovnica

The Croatia flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and blue, the pan-Slavic colours Croatia has used since 1848, with the national coat of arms over the centre. The shield is the šahovnica, a chequerboard of 25 red and white squares beginning with red in the top corner, a device recorded on Croatian arms since the fifteenth century and the reason the national football kit looks like a chessboard. Above the shield sits a crown of five smaller shields for the historic regions: the oldest known Croatian arms, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria and Slavonia. This version was adopted on 21 December 1990 as the country moved to independence. Statehood Day, the Vatreni and the summer holiday

Statehood Day on 30 May is the national holiday, marking the first session of the modern Croatian parliament in 1990, and the Croatian Catholic missions, folklore groups and clubs in London, Manchester, Bedford and Leeds mark it with flags, music and a lot of food. Most Croatia flags in the UK, though, go up for football: the Vatreni reached the World Cup final in 2018 and the semi-final in 2022, the World Cup 2026 Croatia team bundle covers the next one, and Euro summers bring the chequerboard to every pub with a big screen. Sizes, grades and fittings

20x12in is the car window and hand-pole size, 3ft x 2ft fits a bedroom wall or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft is the standard for a garden pole, a bar or a football crowd, and 8ft x 5ft is for a club flagpole, a stage or a frontage. The Flagtex grade is a woven-polyester print with brass eyelets, right for a tournament or a party. DuraFlag is the knitted-polyester grade with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag that lives on a pole outdoors, supplied with clips or a rope and toggle.

Croatia bunting

Croatia bunting carries the tricolour and shield on each rectangular pennant, sewn to a strong tape in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m length suits a doorway or a bar, 9m goes down a room or across a hall for Statehood Day or a tournament night, and several lengths tie together for a street or a beer garden.

Hand flags and table flags

Croatia hand flags on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in are the match-day and parade flags.
