The Tokelau flag: a canoe under the Southern Cross
Tokelau adopted its own flag in 2009, after a design process in which the people of the three atolls chose between several proposals. The flag is a dark blue field with a large yellow Tokelauan canoe, or vaka, stylised so that its hull and sail form a single sweeping shape across the lower part of the flag. Above it, towards the hoist, are four white five-pointed stars arranged as the Southern Cross, the constellation that Pacific navigators have steered by for centuries. The canoe stands for the journey of the Tokelauan people through life and their reliance on the sea, and the stars for the guidance that has brought them safely home. Three atolls and a community abroad
Tokelau is made up of Atafu, Nukunonu and Fakaofo, three coral atolls in the South Pacific north of Samoa, with no airport and a population of around 1,500 reached only by boat from Apia. It is a territory of New Zealand, and many more Tokelauans live in New Zealand, especially around Wellington and the Hutt Valley, than on the atolls themselves. In 2012 Tokelau became one of the first places in the world to generate nearly all its electricity from solar power. Tokelauan families, Pacific church groups and university societies in Britain use the flag and bunting for celebrations, while flag collectors prize it as one of the newest flags in the Pacific.
