The San Marino flag: white over light blue, with the three towers
San Marino flies two versions of the same flag. The civil flag is a plain bicolour, white above light blue, for the snow of Monte Titano and the sky over it. The state flag adds the coat of arms in the centre: three white towers topped with ostrich feathers on three green peaks, the fortresses of Guaita, Cesta and Montale that still stand on the ridge above the old town, framed by oak and laurel branches, with a closed crown above for sovereignty and a scroll reading LIBERTAS beneath. The colours were fixed by decree on 6 April 1862 and the arms were formally standardised in 2011. Both are in this collection: the San Marino crest flag in the full run of sizes, and the plain San Marino flag in 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft.
3 September, the Captains Regent and the Titans
The Feast of Saint Marinus and the founding of the Republic on 3 September is the national holiday, remembering the stonemason who, tradition says, settled on the mountain in 301 AD. Twice a year, on 1 April and 1 October, the two Captains Regent are installed in a procession through the Piazza della Libertà, and the flag is everywhere in the old town for both. Sport gives the flag its other outings: the national football side, the Titans, remembered for Davide Gualtieri’s eight-second goal against England in 1993, finally recorded a first competitive win against Liechtenstein in September 2024 and promotion from Nations League D, and the motor-racing crowd at Imola and Misano wave it beside the Italian tricolour. Sammarinese families and Italian clubs in the UK fly it at Wembley whenever the draw pairs the two countries and at September dinners for the Republic’s birthday.
Sizes, grades and fittings
The crest flag runs from 20x12in through 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft to 8ft x 5ft. Flagtex is the lighter woven polyester, printed with the arms in full colour, for a wall, a window or an occasional outing; DuraFlag is a heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched hems and a stronger header that holds its colour through a season on a pole. Every flag comes with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag 5ft x 3ft and larger can be ordered with clips or rope and toggle for a halyard. The plain bicolour comes in the two middle sizes with eyelets.
San Marino bunting
San Marino bunting repeats the crest flag on rectangular polyester pennants stitched to a tape, in a 3m length for a bar, a shop window or a classroom display and a 9m length that will dress a clubhouse or a restaurant for 3 September. The pennants are double-sided and the tape ties off at either end, so the run can go up outside without worrying about a shower.
Hand flags and table flags
San Marino hand flags are the crest design on a wooden stick in 9x6in and 18x12in, the right thing for the stands at Serravalle or a school project on Europe’s microstates. For a desk or a dinner there are four table formats: the plain 6x4in table flag with base, the crest on a 9x6in wooden table flag, the large 18x12in wooden table flag for a reception counter and a satin table flag with a sleeve for a consular or hotel desk. Italy, Vatican City, Monaco and Liechtenstein are all under world flags.
San Marino flag FAQs
What is the difference between the San Marino flag and the San Marino crest flag?
The plain flag is the white-and-blue civil bicolour; the crest flag is the state flag with the three towers coat of arms in the centre. The crest version is the one normally flown at official events and is the better seller.
What do the three towers on the San Marino flag represent?
The fortresses of Guaita, Cesta and Montale on the three peaks of Monte Titano, each topped with an ostrich feather.
What does LIBERTAS mean on the flag?
It is Latin for liberty, the motto of the Republic, which has kept its independence since the fourth century and is the oldest surviving republic.
When is San Marino’s national day?
3 September, the Feast of Saint Marinus and the anniversary of the founding of the Republic in 301 AD.
Which sizes of San Marino flag are in stock?
The crest flag in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in Flagtex and DuraFlag; the plain bicolour in 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft.
Is the San Marino flag the same as Monaco’s?
No. Monaco is red over white; San Marino is white over light blue, and the state version carries the coat of arms.
How soon can San Marino flags arrive?
The whole range is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, with same-day dispatch before 2pm and free UK delivery in 1–2 working days.
