The Turks and Caicos flag: conch, lobster and cactus

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a British Overseas Territory, and their flag is the British Blue Ensign, a dark blue field with the Union Jack in the canton, defaced in the fly with the shield from the territory’s coat of arms. The yellow shield shows three local emblems: a queen conch shell, a spiny lobster and a Turk’s head cactus, the plant with a red cap like a fez that gave the Turks Islands their name. Conch and lobster are the fisheries that have sustained the islands for generations and still appear on every restaurant menu in Providenciales. The territory’s own shield was put on the ensign in 1968, replacing an older colonial badge that showed salt being raked and piled on the shore, once the islands’ main trade. Constitution Day, the Conch Festival and visitors from Britain

As a British Overseas Territory the islands mark the King’s Official Birthday and Commonwealth Day with parades on Grand Turk, the capital, and Providenciales. The Conch Festival in November and Maskanoo, the Boxing Day street parade on Providenciales, are the lively flag occasions. Turks and Caicos athletes compete at the Commonwealth Games under the flag. In Britain it is chosen by islanders studying or working here, by holidaymakers who return to Grace Bay year after year, by divers and sailors, and by anyone putting together a display of all the British Overseas Territories alongside the Falklands, Gibraltar, Bermuda and the Caymans.

Flags are stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. A 20x12in is right for a boat or a car; a 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole. Flagtex is the lighter, lower-priced printed polyester; DuraFlag is the tougher knitted fabric with reinforced hems for marine and long-term outdoor use. Brass eyelets are fitted to both grades, and DuraFlag can be supplied with clips or rope and toggle.

Turks and Caicos bunting

Turks and Caicos bunting sets the Blue Ensign with the shield on rectangular pennants, sold in 3m and 9m lengths for a beach-themed party, a travel shop window or a Commonwealth display. The polyester pennants are printed on both sides.
