The Tunisian flag: a red field, a white disc and the crescent

Tunisia’s flag is a plain red field with a white disc in the centre, inside which a red crescent partly encloses a red five-pointed star. It is one of the oldest national flags still flown: the Husainid bey Al-Husayn II introduced it in 1831 after the Ottoman fleet was lost at Navarino, as a naval ensign distinct from the Ottoman flag, and it was kept through the French protectorate, confirmed at independence in 1956 and written into the constitution of 1959. The exact proportions were fixed by law only in 1999, with the disc one third of the hoist in diameter and the flag itself 2:3. The resemblance to the Turkish flag is deliberate in origin, the Ottoman star and crescent recoloured, but the Tunisian arrangement places the emblem inside a white circle, and the star sits inside the crescent rather than beside it. 20 March, 25 July and the Eagles of Carthage

Independence Day on 20 March marks the end of the French protectorate in 1956 and is the principal flag day; Republic Day on 25 July recalls the abolition of the monarchy in 1957, and 14 January marks the 2011 revolution. Martyrs’ Day on 9 April and Women’s Day on 13 August are also on the calendar. Tunisians in the UK are a small but visible community, with the embassy in London hosting 20 March receptions and the Tunisian restaurants of west London and Manchester putting the flag up for football. The Tunisia flag comes in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, and in two grades. Flagtex is the standard printed polyester, light and priced for a season of occasional use outdoors or long use indoors; DuraFlag is the knitted heavyweight with a double-stitched edge, built to stay on a pole in all weather. The 5ft x 3ft covers a flagpole, a restaurant front or a balcony, 3ft x 2ft a short wall pole or a window, 8ft x 5ft a stage or fan park, and the 20x12in a car or a hand pole. Both grades have a sewn header with two brass eyelets, with clips or rope and toggle offered on the DuraFlag.

Tunisia bunting

Tunisia bunting is made up of rectangular pennants printed with the flag and sewn to a tape, in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres edges a counter or a doorway; nine metres runs round a café, a classroom for a North Africa topic or the ceiling of a function room for Independence Day. The material is weatherproof polyester, so it can go outside over a terrace. Plain red and white lengths in the bunting range match the colours.

Hand flags and table flags
