The Kosovo flag: a gold map under six stars
The Kosovo flag is a blue field with a gold silhouette of Kosovo’s outline in the centre and an arc of six white five-pointed stars above it. The stars stand for Kosovo’s six main communities, the blue, gold and white were chosen to echo the colours of the European Union flag, and the map was picked over other proposals because it carried no single community’s symbols. The design was selected by competition from nearly a thousand entries and adopted on 17 February 2008. The proportions are 2:5, a longer shape than most national flags, though the sizes we stock follow the usual 3:5 cut so that the flag matches its neighbours on a row of poles. Our Kosovo flag prints the map in a true gold with the stars evenly spaced along the arc, which is where cheaper flags tend to crowd them.
17 February, the judo mat and the football
The anniversary on 17 February is the main day for the flag, with celebrations in Pristina and in diaspora communities, and it appears again for the Albanian-language summer festivals and weddings at which it is usually flown alongside the red-and-black Albanian flag. In sport the blue and gold have had remarkable success for a flag so young: Majlinda Kelmendi won judo gold at Rio in 2016, the first medal under this flag, Distria Krasniqi and Nora Gjakova both won judo gold in Tokyo in 2021, and the football team, admitted to UEFA and FIFA in 2016, met England twice in Euro 2020 qualifying, a 5-3 at St Mary’s in Southampton and a 4-0 in Pristina. Britain has a large Kosovar community, mostly in London and the south-east, so the flag is seen on cafés and community centres, at the annual Albanian festivals in the capital and on car windows whenever the national team plays.
Choosing a Kosovo flag
