The Djibouti flag: two peoples and a red star

Djibouti's flag has two horizontal bands, light blue over green, with a white triangle at the hoist bearing a red five-pointed star. The light blue represents the Issa, who are Somali, and the green the Afar, the two main communities of the country. White stands for peace, and the red star for unity and the struggle for independence. The flag was first raised on 27 June 1977, when the former French Territory of the Afars and the Issas became the Republic of Djibouti. Independence Day and a port at the crossroads

Independence Day on 27 June is the national holiday. Djibouti sits on the Bab-el-Mandeb strait where the Red Sea meets the Gulf of Aden, which makes its port one of the busiest gateways to Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. Lake Assal, a salt lake far below sea level, is the lowest point in Africa.
