The smiley face flag

The yellow smiley is the simplest design in the shop and one of the most recognised images anywhere: two dots and a curve on a yellow disc, drawn by Harvey Ball in 1963 for a Massachusetts insurance firm and reused ever since by badge makers, record sleeves and, from 1988, the acid house scene. On a smiley face flag it does one job, which is to tell the street, the festival field or the office window that someone in there is enjoying themselves. The Smiley Face Acid flag is the rave version, the grin that became the badge of the second summer of love, and it is the one that goes up on campervans at festivals and in student halls across the country.

Which smiley

Beyond the classic yellow and the acid house smiley there is a pink smiley, a rainbow smiley for Pride and a Yellow Face Icons flag covered in emoji-style faces. Then come the national smileys: the Union Jack smiley, the St Andrews smiley, the Ireland smiley and the same face on the flags of Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, India, Italy, Jamaica, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and Spain, each a 5ft x 3ft that makes a football tournament, a Eurovision party or a street festival a little less earnest.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The classic smiley face flag is held in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in Flagtex woven polyester with brass eyelets, from £6.99. The acid house smiley and the Union Jack smiley go further: a 20x12in courtesy size, the three standard sizes in Flagtex, and a heavyweight 150gsm DuraFlag with clips or a rope and toggle for a pole that flies it every day, up to £39.99 for the 8ft x 5ft DuraFlag. The national smileys are 5ft x 3ft only and the pink smiley comes in 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Everything here is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse.

Smiley bunting

Smiley face bunting is a string of rectangular pennants on a tape in 3m and 9m lengths, with the acid smiley bunting, the Union Jack smiley bunting and the rainbow smiley bunting in the same two lengths, from £9.98. A 9m run dresses a bar or a marquee entrance; two 3m lengths cover a party table and a doorway.

Hand flags, windsocks and table flags

Smiley hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in, with the acid, Union Jack and rainbow smileys alongside, from £5.99. The smiley face windsock and the acid smiley windsock are campsite and festival-pitch markers at £9.99, easy to find across a field of identical tents. On the desk, the smiley face table flag with base is a 6x4in pick-me-up for a reception or a classroom, and the rainbow smiley satin table flag sits on a chrome base. For the rest of the festival range see the festival flags and rainbow flags hubs.

Smiley face flag FAQs

What sizes does the smiley face flag come in?

3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in Flagtex polyester. The acid house and Union Jack smileys also come in a 20x12in size and as a heavyweight DuraFlag.

What is the difference between the smiley and the acid smiley?

The classic is the plain yellow face. The acid smiley is the slightly wonky grin used on acid house flyers from 1988 onward, and it is the one rave and festival customers usually ask for.

Is there a Union Jack smiley flag?

Yes, along with St Andrews, Ireland and a dozen other national flags with the smiley across them, all 5ft x 3ft; the Union Jack version is also stocked as bunting, hand flags and a table flag.

Do you sell smiley bunting?

Four designs in 3m and 9m lengths: classic, acid, Union Jack smiley and rainbow smiley. Each is a run of rectangular pennants on a tape with ties at both ends.

Which smiley flag is best for a festival tent?

A 3ft x 2ft on a telescopic pole, or a windsock on a fibreglass pole; both show across a campsite. A 5ft x 3ft suits a campervan with a pole clamp.

Can I fly a smiley flag outdoors all summer?

Flagtex is fine for a season of fair weather. For a pole that stays up through wind and rain, choose the DuraFlag version of the acid or Union Jack smiley with clips or a rope and toggle.
