The Turkish flag: Ay Yıldız

The Turkey flag, the Ay Yıldız or “moon star”, is a white crescent and five-pointed star on a red field. The design was the Ottoman flag from 1844, when the eight-pointed star was simplified to five points, and the Republic kept it in 1923; the Turkish Flag Law of 1936 fixed the proportions exactly, from the 2:3 ratio to the position of the crescent, which is why a correctly drawn Turkish flag has the crescent slightly toward the hoist and the star just outside its horns. Red had been the colour of Ottoman banners for centuries, and the crescent and star are far older than Islam in Anatolia, going back to the coinage of Byzantium. Republic Day, Victory Day and the Milli Takım

Republic Day on 29 October is the biggest date, followed by Victory Day on 30 August, National Sovereignty and Children’s Day on 23 April and Youth and Sports Day on 19 May; Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot communities in north London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow mark all four with flag-raisings and school events. Football drives the rest: the national team at the Euros and in qualifiers, Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş in European competition, and Turkish boxers and wrestlers. Kebab houses, Turkish barbers, bakeries and restaurants keep a flag up all year, and a Turkish wedding or a circumcision party buys the bunting by the roll.

Which size Turkish flag?

Restaurant fronts, garden poles and wedding halls mostly fly the 5ft x 3ft Turkish flag. Use 3ft x 2ft in a barber-shop window, on a market stall or a smaller pole, 8ft x 5ft on a football-ground banner, a stage or a Turkish community-centre flagpole, and 20x12in on a car or a Turkish hand pole.
