The Somali flag: the Star of Unity
The flag of Somalia is a light blue field with a single white five-pointed star in the centre. It was designed by Mohammed Awale Liban and adopted on 12 October 1954 for the Trust Territory of Somaliland under Italian administration, and it became the national flag when that territory and the former British Somaliland united as the independent Somali Republic on 1 July 1960. The blue was chosen in recognition of the United Nations, under whose trusteeship the territory had been placed, and has since come to be read as the sky and the Indian Ocean. The white star is the Star of Unity, its five points representing the five regions in which Somalis have traditionally lived. The proportion is 2:3, and our Somalia flag is printed in the correct light blue, noticeably paler than the UN flag, with the star sized to the official specification.
Independence Day, Somali Week and the Ocean Stars
Independence Day on 1 July is the main date for the Somali flag, with 26 June, the independence of the former British Somaliland, often marked alongside it, and Flag Day on 12 October. Britain has one of the largest Somali communities in Europe, in London boroughs such as Tower Hamlets, Camden, Ealing and Brent, and in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Sheffield, Leicester, Manchester and Liverpool, and the flag is out for Somali Week Festival in London each October, for Eid, for weddings and at community centres, cafés and restaurants all year. In sport the flag follows the Ocean Stars, the national football team, and the many British athletes of Somali heritage, and it is a familiar sight at London’s school sports days and community football tournaments.
Somalia flag sizes and grades
The 5ft x 3ft flag fits a pole, a community-centre front or a wedding hall; 3ft x 2ft fits a café wall, a stall or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft is for a large fixed pole or a stage; and 20x12in is for a car or a hand pole. Flagtex is a printed woven polyester for events and short periods outside; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched edges for a flag kept on a pole. Both carry a sewn header and brass eyelets, with clips or rope and toggle offered on the DuraFlag.
Somalia bunting
Somalia bunting repeats the star flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, sewn to a tape in weatherproof polyester, for a 1 July celebration, a wedding, a graduation party or a café. Plain light blue and white lengths from the bunting range carry the colours along a longer hall.
