The Tonga flag: a red cross that can never change

Tonga’s flag is a red field with a white rectangle in the upper hoist corner holding a red cross. The cross reflects the Christian faith of the kingdom, and the red the blood of Christ’s sacrifice. King George Tupou I wanted a flag that would show Tonga as a Christian nation, and the first designs were a red cross on white; when that proved too close to the Red Cross emblem, the red field was added. The design was fixed in the Constitution of 1875, which states that the flag shall never be altered, so it is one of the oldest unchanged national flags in the world. Tonga is also the only Pacific nation never to have been formally colonised, though it was a British protected state from 1900 to 1970. Rugby, Emancipation Day and Tongans in Britain

Tonga’s flags turn any stadium red. The rugby union side, the Ikale Tahi, perform the Sipi Tau before kick-off and have played at nearly every Rugby World Cup, while the rugby league team, Mate Ma’a Tonga, famously beat Australia in 2019 and drew huge travelling crowds to the 2021 World Cup in England. Tongan forwards and wings are fixtures in the Premiership and Super League, so the flag appears at club grounds as well as at internationals. National dates include Emancipation Day on 4 June, marking the end of the British protectorate in 1970, and Constitution Day on 4 November. The Tongan community in the UK, many linked to rugby, gathers for church, kava and family celebrations, and the flag is out for every Tonga Test at Twickenham or in the north.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Tonga flags come in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Rugby fans usually take a 5ft x 3ft to the ground; the 8ft x 5ft makes a big statement in a stand or on a mast. Flagtex is a printed lightweight woven polyester, DuraFlag a heavier knitted grade with double-stitched hems. Both have brass eyelets, and DuraFlag can be fitted with clips or rope and toggle.

Tonga bunting repeats the red flag and white canton on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m runs, for a clubhouse, a church hall or a family feast. Weather-resistant polyester, readable from both sides.
