The Kuwait flag: pan-Arab colours with a black trapezium

The flag of Kuwait has three horizontal bands of green, white and red with a black trapezium along the hoist, its slanted edge cutting into the green and red bands. It was adopted on 7 September 1961, a few months after independence from the British protectorate in June that year, and first flown on 24 November 1961, replacing the red flags with white script used since the nineteenth century. The four colours are the pan-Arab colours, and Kuwait links them to a verse by the poet Safie Al-Din Al-Hilli: white are our deeds, black our battles, green our lands and red our swords. The trapezium rather than the triangle of neighbouring flags is what makes the Kuwaiti flag easy to pick out, and when hung vertically the green band goes on the left with the black trapezium at the top. Our Kuwait flag is printed with the trapezium in the correct 1:4 proportion so it reads as a Kuwaiti and not a Jordanian or Palestinian flag.

National Day, Liberation Day and Al-Azraq

National Day on 25 February and Liberation Day on 26 February make a two-day holiday when the whole country turns out in the flag’s colours along the Gulf Road, with the Kuwait Towers lit and the flag on every car and balcony; the Hala February festival runs for the whole month. In sport Al-Azraq, the Blues, won the Asian Cup in 1980, reached the 1982 World Cup in Spain and have ten Gulf Cup titles, and Kuwaiti shooters have won Olympic medals in the trap and skeet. Kuwait has long ties with Britain: the Kuwait Investment Office has been in London since 1953, thousands of Kuwaiti students are at UK universities each year, many Kuwaiti families spend the summer in London and the embassy in Knightsbridge and the Kuwaiti Cultural Office hold National Day receptions where the flag is everywhere. The flag is also seen at Gulf football tournaments and Arab cultural festivals in the UK.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Flagtex grade of this flag, the printed woven polyester for indoor displays and short-term use outdoors, is stocked in 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, while the DuraFlag, the knitted heavyweight with double-stitched hems for a pole through the seasons, is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft and 5ft x 3ft. Use the 5ft x 3ft on a flagpole, a majlis wall or a student society stand, the 3ft x 2ft in a window or on a desk wall, the 8ft x 5ft for a stage backdrop or a large fixed mast and the 20x12in on a car or a hand pole. Both grades have a sewn header and brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or rope and toggle.

Kuwait bunting

Kuwait bunting is a tape of rectangular pennants in the green, white, red and black design, in 3m and 9m lengths. A 3m run frames a doorway, a buffet or a classroom display for 25 February; a 9m run dresses a hall, a marquee or a diwaniya for the two-day holiday. The polyester pennants are printed on both sides and weatherproof.

Hand flags and table flags

Kuwait hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for National Day parades, football and school events. The Kuwait table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for an office, a trade stand or a dinner table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in suits an embassy desk or a boardroom. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and Oman flags are under world flags.
