The Bhutan flag and the thunder dragon
Bhutan's flag is divided diagonally from the lower hoist to the upper fly. The upper half is yellow, for the secular authority of the king; the lower half is orange, for the Buddhist spiritual tradition. Across the line lies Druk, the white thunder dragon that gives Bhutan its own name, Druk Yul, the land of the thunder dragon. The dragon's white colour stands for purity, and the jewels clutched in its claws for the wealth and security of the people. Along with Wales, it is one of the very few flags to feature a dragon. The Bhutan flag we stock shows the dragon's scales and claws in full detail.
National Day, festivals and travellers
National Day on 17 December marks the crowning of Ugyen Wangchuck as the first king in 1907. Through the year, monastery festivals known as tsechu bring masked dances to the dzongs of Paro and Thimphu. In Britain the flag appears at talks by trekkers back from the Himalaya, in yoga and meditation studios and at Buddhist centres. Bhutan's idea of measuring Gross National Happiness also makes it a favourite for wellbeing displays in schools and offices.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Bhutan flags come in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft from £6.99. The dragon reads best on a 3ft x 2ft or larger. Flagtex is a printed lightweight cloth for indoor display, while DuraFlag is knitted, thicker and double-hemmed for outside, available with eyelets, clips or rope and toggle.
Bhutan bunting
Bhutan bunting carries the dragon flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m, a colourful border for a meditation room, a travel talk or a Himalayan-themed event.
Hand flags and table flags
Bhutan hand flags come in 9x6in and 18x12in on wooden sticks. Choose the 6x4in Bhutan table flag with base or the 18x12in large wooden table flag. Nepal and India are with our world flags.
