The Tajikistan flag: crown and seven stars

The flag of Tajikistan was adopted on 24 November 1992. It has three horizontal bands of red, white and green, with the white band in the middle wider than the other two, in the proportion 2:3:2. Centred in the white band is a gold crown beneath a semicircle of seven gold five-pointed stars. The red is said to stand for the unity of the nation and the sun, the white for purity and cotton, the country’s traditional crop, and the green for the fertile valleys and the spring. The crown recalls the word Taj, often linked with the name of the Tajik people, and the seven stars are tied to the number seven as a symbol of perfection and happiness in Tajik tradition. Independence Day, Navruz and Tajiks in Britain

Independence Day on 9 September marks the declaration of 1991, and Navruz, the Persian New Year on 21 March, is the most joyful festival of the year, with sumalak cooked overnight and family visits. The Tajik community in the UK, together with students at British universities, uses the flag for these dates and for cultural evenings. It is also seen at international wrestling, judo and boxing events and at football matches for the national side.
