The Ecuadorian flag: the Miranda tricolour with the condor

Ecuador’s flag is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, blue and red in which the yellow band is twice the depth of the other two, with the national coat of arms at the centre. The colours come from the flag Francisco de Miranda raised in 1806 and which Gran Colombia adopted after independence, which is why Colombia and Venezuela fly the same three; Ecuador’s version, with the double-width yellow and the arms, was confirmed on 26 September 1860 under García Moreno and the arms were given their present form in 1900. Yellow is explained as the sun, the grain and the gold of the country, blue as the sky and the Pacific, red as the blood of the patriots. The arms show the snow-capped Chimborazo, the river Guayas with the steamship of the same name, a sun in the zodiac band for the months of the 1845 revolution, and above it all an Andean condor with wings spread. The proportions are 1:2. Our Ecuador flag is the state version with the arms, printed sharply enough that the condor and the mountain read at a distance.

10 August, Flag Day and La Tri

The national holiday is 10 August, the Primer Grito de Independencia of 1809 in Quito, and 26 September is Día de la Bandera; 24 May marks the Battle of Pichincha and 9 October the independence of Guayaquil, each with its own civic parades. Ecuadorians form one of the larger Latin American communities in Britain, centred on south London around Elephant and Castle and north London around Seven Sisters, with the Carnaval del Pueblo and the Latin markets the places where flags and bunting are most in evidence. Football is the other great occasion: La Tri have reached the World Cup in 2002, 2006, 2014, 2022 and again for 2026, and the World Cup 2026 Ecuador team bundle puts a flag, bunting and hand flags together for a match at a lower price than the separate items. Richard Carapaz’s Olympic road-race gold in 2021 and his Grand Tour wins, and the walkers who followed Jefferson Pérez, carry the flag in other sports.

Which size and which grade

The Ecuador flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. The Flagtex grade is a printed woven polyester that suits a party, a restaurant or a few weeks on a pole; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted polyester with double-stitched hems for a flag flown permanently. For a 6m garden pole take 5ft x 3ft; for a window or a wall bracket 3ft x 2ft; for a stage at a community festival 8ft x 5ft; and for a car or hand pole 20x12in. Both grades have a sewn header with brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag also comes with clips or rope and toggle.

Ecuador bunting

Ecuador bunting is 3m or 9m of rectangular pennants carrying the flag design, sewn to a tape. A 3m run suits a market stall or a doorway; 9m goes round a restaurant, a church hall or a school display on South America. It is polyester and copes with rain, and lengths can be joined for a longer run. Plain yellow, blue and red lengths are in the bunting range.

Hand flags and table flags

Ecuador hand flags on wooden sticks are stocked in 9x6in and 18x12in for parades, carnival floats and the fan zone. For the desk there is the Ecuador table flag at 6x4in with a base, the 9x6in wooden table flag, the 18x12in large wooden table flag for a reception, and a sleeved satin table flag for a formal table. Colombia, Peru, Venezuela and Bolivia are under world flags.

Ecuadorian flag FAQs

Why does the Ecuador flag look like Colombia’s?

Both descend from the Gran Colombia tricolour of 1819. Ecuador’s state flag carries the national coat of arms in the centre and is longer at 1:2; Colombia’s plain flag has no arms.

What is on the Ecuadorian coat of arms?

Chimborazo, the Guayas river with the steamship Guayas, a sun with the zodiac signs for March to June 1845, fasces, laurel and palm, and a condor above.

What do the colours of the Ecuador flag mean?

Yellow for the sun, the harvest and the mineral wealth, blue for the sky and the sea, red for the blood of those who fought for independence.

When is Ecuador’s national day?

10 August, the first cry of independence in Quito in 1809. Flag Day is 26 September.

Does the Ecuador flag have to be flown with the arms?

The civil flag without arms exists, but the version with the coat of arms is the one used for almost every purpose and is the one we stock.

What Ecuador flag size for a 6m telescopic pole?

5ft x 3ft. Use 3ft x 2ft on a wall bracket and 8ft x 5ft on a fixed pole of 20ft or more.

How soon can an Ecuador flag be delivered?
