Eurovision flags: one for every country in the draw

The Eurovision Song Contest has run every May since the first seven-country edition in Lugano in 1956, and the flag-waving in the arena is as much a part of the broadcast as the voting. This page gathers the national flag of every country that has entered in recent years, from the Sweden flag with its record seven wins and the Ireland flag with seven of its own, through the Italy, France, Germany and Spain flags of the automatic-qualifying Big Five, to the Ukraine, Switzerland and Austria flags of the most recent winners. The United Kingdom is represented by the Union Jack, with five wins from Sandie Shaw in 1967 to Katrina and the Waves in 1997 and Liverpool’s turn as host in 2023 on Ukraine’s behalf.

Eurovision parties in the UK

The UK way of watching is the sweepstake party: every guest draws a country, and the flag goes on the wall, the sofa or the garden fence for the night. Pubs and clubs run their own, with a flag per table, and the fan villages and official screenings in the host city need flags by the hundred. The grand final is on the Saturday of contest week in mid-May, with the two semi-finals on the Tuesday and Thursday before it, so most orders land in the last two weeks of April and the first week of May. Australia has competed as a guest since 2015 and is stocked for the same reason, and the Israel, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia flags cover the eastern end of the Eurovision map.

Which size for a Eurovision party?

5ft x 3ft is the size for a living-room wall, a pub beam or a garden fence and the one most parties buy, at £6.99 in the Flagtex grade. 3ft x 2ft fits a smaller wall, a car window or a table runner; 20x12in on a hand pole is the one to wave at the screen when your country’s points come in; and 8ft x 5ft is for a venue backdrop or a fan-zone stage. All four sizes come with a sewn header and brass eyelets, and the DuraFlag grade with clips or rope and toggle is there for a pub or a hotel that wants the winner’s flag on the pole afterwards.

Historic entrants

The page also carries flags of countries that have competed in earlier decades but are not in the current line-up, including the Yugoslavia flag from the 1961 to 1992 entries and the Serbia and Montenegro flag of 2004 to 2005, together with Russia, Belarus and Morocco, whose single appearance was in 1980.
