The Nigerian flag: green, white, green
The Nigeria flag is three equal vertical bands, green at the hoist and fly with white in the middle, in a 1:2 proportion. It was designed by Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, a 23-year-old Nigerian student in London, for a 1959 competition ahead of independence; his original had a red quarter-sun in the white band, which the judges removed, and the plain green-white-green was first raised at midnight on 1 October 1960. Green stands for Nigeria’s natural wealth and agriculture, white for peace and unity. The specified green is a true mid-green, and plenty of cheap flags get it wrong with a lime or a bottle green; our Nigeria flag is printed through on woven polyester in the correct shade so it looks right beside an embassy flag.
Independence Day, Democracy Day and the Super Eagles
1 October, Independence Day, is the big date for Nigerian flags in the UK, with parades, church services and Nigeria Day events in Peckham, Hackney, Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds; Democracy Day on 12 June is the other fixed holiday. Football drives most of the rest: the Super Eagles at the Africa Cup of Nations, World Cup qualifiers, the Super Falcons, and Nigerian players at Premier League clubs, plus the boxers and sprinters at every Olympics. Nigerian churches, restaurants, barbershops and African food stores fly a flag all year, and an owambe or a traditional wedding will take a roll of bunting and a dozen hand flags for the guests.
Which size Nigeria flag?
