The Montserrat flag: Erin, the harp and the cross

Montserrat flies a Blue Ensign, with the Union Flag in the canton and the island’s coat of arms in the fly. The shield shows Erin, the female figure of Ireland, in a green dress, holding a golden harp in one hand and embracing a dark cross with the other, standing on a rocky shore under a blue sky. The arms recall the Irish settlers who arrived from St Kitts and Virginia in the 1630s and gave Montserrat its nickname, the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. The design was adopted in 1960 and the shield has been in use since 1909. Our Montserrat flag prints Erin, harp and cross in full colour on the blue.

St Patrick’s Day, the volcano and Montserratians in Britain

Montserrat is the only place outside Ireland where St Patrick’s Day is a public holiday, celebrated with a week-long festival, masquerade dancers and a freedom run; it also marks a 1768 slave uprising. The Soufrière Hills volcano, active since 1995, buried the old capital Plymouth, and many islanders resettled in Britain, especially in London, Leicester and Birmingham. Their families fly the flag on 17 March, at the island’s December festival and at reunion dances.
