The Cook Islands flag: fifteen stars in a ring

The Cook Islands flag is a Blue Ensign: a dark blue field with the Union Flag in the canton and, in the fly, a large circle of fifteen white five-pointed stars. Each star stands for one of the fifteen islands, from Rarotonga and Aitutaki in the south to Penrhyn and Pukapuka in the north, and the ring shows them as one people. The current design was adopted on 4 August 1979; before that the islands used a green flag with a gold ring of stars. The Union Flag recalls the islands’ links with Britain and New Zealand. Te Maeva Nui, rugby league and island holidays

The big date is Constitution Day on 4 August, celebrated with Te Maeva Nui, a week of drumming, dance and singing contests on Rarotonga. The Cook Islands rugby league side, the Kukis, draw players from clubs in Australia, New Zealand and England, and the flag appears in the stand whenever they play. Visitors back from Aitutaki lagoon and families with Cook Islands Maori heritage use it for birthdays and island-themed parties.
