The Guam flag: a sling stone seal on deep blue

Guam’s flag is a dark blue field edged with a narrow red border. In the centre is a pointed oval, the shape of the sling stones once used by the Chamorro people, holding the territory’s seal: a coconut palm on a beach, a flying proa canoe on the water, the mouth of the Hagåtña river and the cliff of Puntan Dos Amantes, Two Lovers Point, with GUAM in red letters across the scene. The flag was adopted in 1948 and the red border was added later in memory of the islanders who suffered during the wartime occupation. The palm stands for self-sufficiency and resilience, the proa for the islanders’ seafaring skill. Our Guam flag prints the seal in full colour.

Liberation Day and Chamorro gatherings

Guam’s biggest public celebration is Liberation Day on 21 July, with a parade along Marine Corps Drive, carnival rides and family barbecues. Chamorro families and Pacific Islander societies in the UK bring the flag out for that date, for village fiesta-style parties and for Micronesian cultural evenings.
