The Western Sahara flag: design and dates
The Western Sahara flag, often called the Sahrawi flag, has been in use since 27 February 1976. It is made up of three equal horizontal bands, black at the top, white in the middle and green at the bottom, with a red triangle at the hoist whose point reaches about a third of the way across the flag. In the centre of the white band is a red crescent with a red five-pointed star beside it. The colours are the Pan-Arab colours, shared with several flags across North Africa and the Middle East, and the arrangement is closely related to the flag of the Arab Revolt of 1916. Our Western Sahara flag places the crescent and star in the centre of the white band and the triangle at the correct depth.
Who buys the Western Sahara flag
This flag is bought by collectors of world flags, by Sahrawi community and cultural groups for events, by schools and universities teaching the geography and history of North Africa, and by organisers of international events who need a complete set of regional flags.
