The Sierra Leone flag: green, white and blue
Sierra Leone’s flag is three equal horizontal bands of light green, white and light blue. The green is for agriculture, the natural resources and the mountains that gave the country its name, the Lion Mountains seen by Portuguese sailors in the fifteenth century. White stands for unity and justice, and the blue for the natural harbour of Freetown, one of the largest in the world, and the hope that it would carry the country’s contribution to peace. The flag was designed with the help of the College of Arms in London and was first raised at independence on 27 April 1961. It is a simple tricolour, but the soft shades matter: a dark navy or emerald version looks wrong next to the real thing, so our Sierra Leone flag is printed in the lighter green and sky blue of the official design.
27 April, the Leone Stars and Sierra Leoneans in Britain
Independence Day on 27 April is the main flag day, with parades in Freetown and dances, church thanksgivings and community dinners wherever Sierra Leoneans live. Football brings the flag out too: the Leone Stars returned to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 and drew with holders Algeria, and a string of players born or raised in England have since chosen to play for them. The British connection runs deep. Freetown was founded in 1792 as a settlement for freed Black Loyalists and formerly enslaved people, and the country was a British colony until 1961. Today there are large Sierra Leonean communities in South London, especially around Peckham and Southwark, as well as in Manchester, Birmingham and Leeds, and the flag is part of every Krio wedding, independence ball and charity fundraiser for schools back home.
Sizes, grades and fittings
