The Czech flag: white, red and the blue wedge

The Czech flag is two horizontal bands, white over red, with a blue isosceles triangle reaching from the hoist to the midpoint of the flag. White and red are the colours of Bohemia, taken from the silver lion on red of the Bohemian arms; the blue was added in 1920 to represent Moravia and to stop the flag being mistaken for Poland’s, which is white over red with nothing else. It was adopted by Czechoslovakia on 30 March 1920, and when the federation dissolved at the end of 1992 the Czech Republic kept it unchanged from 1 January 1993, so the flag of Czechia today is the same flag that flew over Prague in the 1920s. The ratio is 2:3 and the triangle is the detail that gets printed wrongly most often: on our Czech Republic flag it runs exactly to the halfway point, as the law specifies.

28 October, the hockey and Wimbledon

Czech Statehood Day on 28 September and Independent Czechoslovak State Day on 28 October are the two big flag days, with 17 November, the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day that marks 1989, close behind. Ice hockey is the national sport and the World Championship each May, plus the Olympics, is when Czech flags come out in numbers, with football and the Euros a close second. Czech tennis players are a fixture of the second week at Wimbledon, which puts the flag on Henman Hill every summer. In the UK the Czech community is centred on London, with the embassy, the Czech Centre and the Czech and Slovak school, and Czech beer halls and bottle shops from Manchester to Brighton hang the flag over the taps.

Which size, which grade

A 5ft x 3ft Czech flag is the pick for a pole, a pub or a fan zone; 3ft x 2ft for a smaller pole or a bedroom; 8ft x 5ft for a big fixed pole or a stage; 20x12in for a car or a hand pole. The standard fitting is a sewn header with brass eyelets; DuraFlag can be had with clips or a rope and toggle instead.

Hanging a Czech flag vertically

Because of the triangle, the Czech flag cannot simply be turned through ninety degrees like a plain tricolour. Hung vertically, the blue wedge goes at the top with the white band on the left and the red on the right as you face it. A 3ft x 2ft or 5ft x 3ft flag with eyelets at one end can be hung this way from two hooks.

Czech Republic bunting

Czech Republic bunting repeats the flag on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, sewn to a tape, for a bar, a beer festival stand or a 28 October party. It is weatherproof polyester, so it can stay outside through a hockey tournament or a summer of garden screenings. Plain white, red and blue runs from the bunting range stretch it further.

Hand flags and table flags

Czech hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for match days and arrivals halls. The Czech Republic table flag is a 6x4in flag on a base for a desk or a restaurant table, and the large wooden table flag at 18x12in works on a bar or a reception counter. Slovakia, Poland, Austria and Germany are all listed under world flags.
