The South Sudan flag: three bands, a blue triangle and a gold star
The flag of South Sudan has three horizontal bands of black, red and green, separated by narrow white stripes, with a blue isosceles triangle at the hoist holding a yellow five-pointed star. Black stands for the people, red for the blood shed for freedom, green for the land and its agriculture, and the white edging for peace. The blue is the water of the Nile, and the gold star, sometimes called the Star of Bethlehem, is the unity of the states of the country. The design was first used by the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement and became the national flag when South Sudan became independent on 9 July 2011, making it the newest internationally recognised country in the world. On our South Sudan flag the white fimbriations are printed at their proper width so the bands read cleanly from a distance.
9 July, the Bright Stars and South Sudanese in Britain
Independence Day on 9 July is the national day, with celebrations in Juba and community events wherever the diaspora lives. Basketball has made the flag famous: the Bright Stars, led by Luol Deng as federation president, qualified for the 2023 FIBA World Cup and then the Paris 2024 Olympics, winning hearts with their first-ever Olympic game victory over Puerto Rico. Deng himself grew up in London after his family left Sudan and played for Great Britain, which gives the team a strong following among British basketball fans. South Sudanese families in the UK, with communities in London, Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow, fly the flag at independence celebrations, church gatherings, cultural nights and youth basketball tournaments.
Sizes, grades and fittings
Sizes run 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. For a gym wall or a car the smaller sizes work; for a pole or a big event go 5ft x 3ft or larger. There is a Flagtex grade in lightweight woven polyester and a DuraFlag grade in thicker knitted polyester with double-stitched hems. All have brass eyelets; DuraFlag has the option of clips or rope and toggle.
