The Morning Star flag: design and dates
The West Papua flag, known as the Morning Star or Bintang Kejora, was first raised on 1 December 1961. It has a vertical red band along the hoist containing a single white five-pointed star, the morning star. The rest of the flag is made up of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven blue and six white, beginning and ending with blue. The design is credited to Nicolaas Jouwe. Our West Papua flag keeps all thirteen stripes evenly spaced, with the star centred in the red hoist.
