The Jordanian flag: the Arab Revolt colours and a seven-pointed star
Jordan’s flag is three horizontal bands of black, white and green with a red triangle at the hoist, and inside the triangle a white seven-pointed star. It was adopted on 16 April 1928 and is a direct descendant of the flag of the Arab Revolt of 1916, in which the Hashemite family led the rising against Ottoman rule; the only change is the star, added to distinguish the Emirate of Transjordan. The four colours are the pan-Arab set: black for the Abbasid caliphate, white for the Umayyad, green for the Fatimid and red for the Hashemite dynasty itself. The seven points of the star are explained as the seven verses of the opening chapter of the Quran, Al-Fatiha, and also as the seven hills on which Amman was built. The ratio is 1:2, which makes it a long flag, and the triangle reaches half the length of the fly. Our Jordan flag is printed with the star centred in the triangle and the bands in the official proportions.
Independence Day and the Nashama
25 May is Independence Day, marking the end of the British mandate in 1946, and is the day the flag is flown most widely; the Embassy in London holds a reception and Jordanian student societies at British universities mark it too. Army Day and the anniversary of the Great Arab Revolt fall on 10 June. The Jordanian community in the UK is modest and professional, in London, Manchester and the medical schools, with a wider circle of British families who have worked in Amman or Aqaba. Football has given the flag a new audience: the national team, the Nashama, reached the Asian Cup final in 2024 and then qualified for the 2026 World Cup, their first finals, which is why the World Cup 2026 Jordan team bundle groups a flag, bunting and hand flags together for a watch party. Taekwondo, where Ahmad Abughaush won Jordan’s first Olympic gold in 2016, and basketball are the other sports where it appears.
Sizes and grades
The Jordan flag is stocked in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft in two grades. Flagtex is a printed woven polyester, the economical option for a reception, a classroom or a few weeks on a pole; DuraFlag is knitted polyester, heavier, double-stitched at the hem and intended for a pole flown through a British winter. Both come with a sewn header and brass eyelets; the DuraFlag can be ordered with clips or rope and toggle. Because the Jordanian flag is 1:2 in its official form, the 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft sizes reproduce it at the common 3:5 ratio, which is how it is almost always sold in the UK.
Jordan bunting
Jordan bunting is sold in 3m and 9m lengths with the flag repeated on rectangular polyester pennants sewn to a tape. The short length dresses a doorway or a buffet table at an Independence Day gathering; the long one goes round a hall, an exhibition stand or a student common room. It can be left outside over a balcony or garden for the evening, and it ties end to end for a longer run. Plain red, green, black and white from the bunting range match the colours.
Hand flags and table flags
Jordan hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for parades, airport welcomes and the fan zone. On the desk the Jordan table flag is a 6x4in flag with a base, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a boardroom or a reception desk, and the satin table flag with a sleeve is the one for a formal conference table. Neighbours Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Palestine are in world flags.
Jordanian flag FAQs
What does the seven-pointed star on the Jordan flag mean?
The seven points stand for the seven verses of Al-Fatiha, the first chapter of the Quran, and are also linked to the seven hills of Amman. The star distinguishes Jordan’s flag from the Arab Revolt flag.
What are the colours of the Jordanian flag?
Black, white and green horizontal bands with a red triangle at the hoist: the pan-Arab colours representing the Abbasid, Umayyad, Fatimid and Hashemite dynasties.
How is the Jordan flag different from the Palestinian flag?
Both share the black, white and green bands and red triangle. Jordan’s adds the white seven-pointed star inside the triangle; the Palestinian flag has no star.
When is Jordan’s Independence Day?
25 May, commemorating independence from the British mandate in 1946.
Has Jordan qualified for the World Cup?
Yes, Jordan qualified for the 2026 finals, the first in their history, after reaching the Asian Cup final in 2024.
Which Jordan flag size suits a house flagpole?
5ft x 3ft on a 6m pole; 3ft x 2ft on a wall-bracket pole; 8ft x 5ft on a large fixed pole or as a backdrop.
How quickly can I get a Jordan flag in the UK?
All sizes, the bunting and the hand flags are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, leaving the same day when ordered before 2pm and arriving within 1–2 working days.
