The Cape Verde flag: ten stars on an Atlantic blue

Cape Verde’s flag is a dark blue field crossed below the centre by a band of white, red and white, with a ring of ten yellow five-pointed stars set towards the hoist and overlapping the band. It was adopted on 22 September 1992, replacing the red, yellow and green flag of the independence era, which had shared the colours and the black star of the PAIGC party with Guinea-Bissau. The blue is the Atlantic and the sky around the islands, the white is peace, the red the effort of the people, and the ten stars are the ten main islands of the archipelago, Santiago, São Vicente, Santo Antão, Fogo, Sal, Boa Vista, Maio, São Nicolau, Brava and Santa Luzia, arranged in a circle to show them as one nation. The official ratio is 10:17, close to 3:5, and the stars sit off-centre at about three-eighths of the length, which is a detail worth checking on any flag offered as the real design. Our Cape Verde flag places the star ring correctly towards the hoist with the band at the right height.

5 July and the Blue Sharks

Independence Day on 5 July marks the end of Portuguese rule in 1975; 20 January, Heroes’ Day, and 13 January, Democracy Day, are also national dates, and Carnival in Mindelo in February or March is the biggest party of the year. The Cape Verdean diaspora is larger than the population at home, strongest in Portugal, the Netherlands, France and New England, with a smaller but active community in Britain, in London, Reading and the south coast, that comes together for 5 July, for Cesaria Évora nights and for football. The Tubarões Azuis, the Blue Sharks, reached the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals in 2013 and 2024 and in October 2025 qualified for the World Cup for the first time, the second-smallest nation ever to do so, which is why the World Cup 2026 Cape Verde team bundle is here: a flag, bunting and hand flags in one pack, priced below the three bought separately. Nani, Patrick Vieira and Henrik Larsson all have Cape Verdean roots, and the islands’ boxers and athletes have carried the flag at the Olympics since 1996.

Sizes and grades of Cape Verde flag

The Cape Verde flag is held in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. Flagtex is a printed woven polyester for a party, a restaurant or a few weeks on a pole; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted polyester with a double-stitched edge for a flag that flies all year. 5ft x 3ft is the garden pole and bar size, 3ft x 2ft the window or short wall pole, 8ft x 5ft the fan-park or stage backdrop, 20x12in the car or hand-pole flag. Both have a sewn header and brass eyelets; the DuraFlag also comes with clips or rope and toggle.

Cape Verde bunting

Cape Verde bunting comes in 3m and 9m lengths of rectangular polyester pennants printed with the flag and sewn to a tape. A 3m run suits a table or a doorway for a cachupa night; 9m goes round a hall or along a bar for a match. It is fine outdoors over a garden or balcony, and lengths can be joined. Plain blue, white and red from the bunting range fill out a longer run.

Hand flags and table flags

Cape Verde hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the fan zone and the Independence Day picnic. The Cape Verde table flag is a 6x4in flag with a base, the 9x6in wooden table flag and the 18x12in large wooden table flag suit a reception or office, and the sleeved satin table flag is for a conference table. Portugal, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Angola are under world flags.
