The Bangladesh flag: a red sun on green

The Bangladesh flag is a bottle-green field with a red disc set slightly towards the hoist, so that it sits in the centre when the flag flies. The green is the land and the youth of the country; the red disc is the sun rising over Bengal and the blood of those who died in the 1971 Liberation War. The first version, raised at Dhaka University on 2 March 1971, had a gold map of the country inside the disc; the map was dropped in the design adopted on 17 January 1972 because it was impossible to print the right way round on both sides, and the flag has not changed since. 26 March, 16 December, Boishakhi Mela and the Tigers

Britain’s Bangladeshi community, the largest outside South Asia, flies the flag on three dates above all: Independence Day on 26 March, Victory Day on 16 December and International Mother Language Day on 21 February, when processions go to the Shaheed Minar in Altab Ali Park off Brick Lane. The Boishakhi Mela in Tower Hamlets each spring, marking Pohela Boishakh, the Bengali New Year on 14 April, is the largest Bengali festival in Europe and the busiest week of the year for Bangladesh bunting and hand flags. Cricket brings the rest: the Tigers at the Oval, Lord’s and Edgbaston, the Bangladesh Premier League on the television in every curry house, and the under-19s. Restaurants in Brick Lane, Oldham, Birmingham, Luton and Bradford keep a table flag by the till all year.

Which size Bangladesh flag?

5ft x 3ft is the size for a restaurant front, a garden pole, a mosque hall or a mela stall; 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom, a classroom or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft for a community-centre flagpole, a procession banner pole or a stage; 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole. All four have a sewn header and brass eyelets, with clips or a rope and toggle on the DuraFlag grade.

Flagtex or DuraFlag?

Flagtex is the printed woven polyester at £6.99 for a 5ft x 3ft and the right grade for a mela, a cricket series or a national day. DuraFlag is the 150gsm knitted polyester with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag that stays outside a community centre, a restaurant or a mosque all year. Bangladesh bunting

Bangladesh bunting repeats the red sun on green on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths, on weatherproof polyester sewn to a strong tape. 3m frames a doorway or a sweet table; 9m runs the length of a restaurant, a community hall or a mela stall. Join two 9m lengths to cross a street for Victory Day.
