The Palau flag: a moon over the ocean

Palau's flag is a light blue field with a large yellow disc set slightly towards the hoist. The blue is the Pacific Ocean, and the disc is the full moon, which in Palauan tradition is the best time for fishing, planting, harvesting and celebration. Placing the moon off-centre makes it look centred when the flag flies. The flag was adopted on 1 January 1981, when Palau became a self-governing republic, and the country became fully independent on 1 October 1994 under a Compact of Free Association with the United States. It is often compared with the flag of Bangladesh, which has a red disc on green. Our Palau flag places the moon in the correct off-centre position.

Independence Day, reefs and conservation

Independence Day on 1 October is the main national holiday. Palau's Rock Islands Southern Lagoon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jellyfish Lake is one of the world's most unusual swims, and the country created one of the first shark sanctuaries. Visitors sign the Palau Pledge, a promise to protect the islands stamped into their passports. In Britain the flag is popular with divers, conservation groups and flag collectors.
