The Azores flag: a goshawk and nine stars
The flag of the Autonomous Region of the Azores was adopted in 1979. It is divided vertically, dark blue at the hoist and white across the larger fly side. In the centre a gold goshawk, the açor that gave the islands their name, spreads its wings beneath an arc of nine gold stars, one for each island from Santa Maria to Corvo. In the upper hoist corner sits the Portuguese shield, showing that the archipelago is a region of Portugal. The blue and white recall the old Portuguese royal flag that was flown from the islands during the nineteenth century. Our Azores flag shows the bird, stars and shield in their proper places.
Holy Spirit festivals, Horta marina and Azoreans abroad
Azores Day falls on Holy Spirit Monday, the day after Pentecost, when the islands hold their Espírito Santo feasts with processions and shared soup. The flag also matters to sailors: yachts crossing the Atlantic stop at Horta on Faial, famous for crews painting their boat names on the harbour wall, and a 20x12in Azores courtesy flag is the right size for the starboard spreader. Families with Azorean roots and visitors back from São Miguel buy the flag for the garden pole or a party.
Sizes and grades of Azores flag
The Azores flag comes in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft, from £7.99. Flagtex is printed lightweight woven polyester with eyelets; DuraFlag, the heavier knitted cloth with double-stitched hems, can be finished with clips or rope and toggle for a mast or halyard.
The Azores range here is the single flag in its sizes and grades. For bunting, hand flags and table flags with the Portuguese national flag see Portugal flags, and for the other Atlantic region see Madeira flags.
