The Falkland Islands flag: a blue ensign with the ram and Desire

The flag of the Falkland Islands is a British blue ensign with the Union Jack in the canton and the islands’ coat of arms in the fly. The shield shows a white ram standing on tussac grass in its upper half, for the sheep farming that shaped the islands, and in the lower half a ship sailing on white and blue waves, the Desire of the English navigator John Davis, who recorded sighting the islands in 1592; beneath it is the motto Desire the Right. The arms were granted in 1948, and in 1999 the white disc that had held them on the flag was dropped and the shield enlarged with a white outline. The Falkland Islands are a British Overseas Territory with their own government in Stanley, and the blue ensign is the territory flag flown on public buildings and by islanders. Liberation Day, Falklands Day and the Stanley sports

Liberation Day on 14 June is a public holiday in the islands, marked with a service at the Liberation Monument in Stanley, a parade and the flag on homes and vehicles, and it is also remembered by veterans’ associations in the UK. Falklands Day on 14 August, recalling the 1592 sighting, is still marked by many islanders, and the Stanley sports after Christmas, with horse racing and gymkhana events, bring people in from the farms. The islands’ links with Britain show in the Falkland Islands Government Office in London, in the many islanders who study and work in the UK, and in visitors drawn by the penguins, albatross and wildlife; schools, clubs and families in Britain with Falklands connections fly the flag for Liberation Day and island events.
