The Hong Kong flag: a white bauhinia on red
The regional flag of Hong Kong is a red field with a stylised white Bauhinia blakeana, the Hong Kong orchid tree flower, at the centre. The flower has five petals, each carrying a small red five-pointed star and a short red line for the stamen, and the whole design turns slightly clockwise so the petals seem to be in motion. The flag was adopted in 1990 and first raised on 1 July 1997; the red matches the national flag of the People’s Republic of China, while the bauhinia, a hybrid first found in Hong Kong in the 1880s, is the emblem of the city itself. Before 1997 the colony flew a British Blue Ensign with the Hong Kong coat of arms, a lion and dragon either side of a shield, in a white disc at the fly. Sevens, dragon boats and Lunar New Year
The Hong Kong Sevens each spring is the rugby tournament that fills Hong Kong Stadium with fancy dress and flags, and Hong Kong supporters bring the bauhinia to the Twickenham and Edinburgh legs as well. The Dragon Boat Festival in early summer is raced on the Thames, in Salford Quays and at Cardiff Bay by UK Hong Kong crews, and Lunar New Year brings the flag out alongside lanterns and lion dancers in Chinatowns from London to Manchester. Hong Kong Day celebrations, Mid-Autumn Festival lantern walks and Hong Kong student societies at UK universities are the other regular uses, and football supporters use it for the Hong Kong team and for Hong Kong players in the English leagues.
Choosing a Hong Kong flag size
Go for 5ft x 3ft on a pole, a balcony or a restaurant wall; 3ft x 2ft for a shop window or a smaller pole; 8ft x 5ft for a stage, a sports club or a large fixed pole; and 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole. Hong Kong bunting
Hong Kong bunting is a run of rectangular pennants with the bauhinia on red, sewn to a tape, in 3m and 9m lengths. The 3m length suits a restaurant counter or the front of a stall; the 9m length will dress a hall, a marquee or the length of a dragon boat tent. The polyester pennants are printed on both sides and can be left out in a shower.
