The Nauru flag: a map in a single line

Nauru's flag is a deep blue field crossed by a narrow gold horizontal stripe, with a white twelve-pointed star below the stripe at the hoist. It works like a simple map: the blue is the Pacific, the gold line the equator, and the star the island of Nauru, which lies just south of the equator. The twelve points stand for the island's twelve original tribes. The flag was adopted on 31 January 1968, the day Nauru became independent from the trusteeship run by Australia, Britain and New Zealand. Our Nauru flag shows the star in the right place, just under the line and close to the hoist.

Independence Day, phosphate and Pacific sport

Independence Day on 31 January is Nauru's national day. The island covers only about 21 square kilometres, making Nauru the smallest republic in the world and the third-smallest country after Vatican City and Monaco. Its wealth came from phosphate mining, which left much of the interior a landscape of limestone pinnacles. Weightlifting and Australian rules football are the most popular sports. In Britain the flag is mainly chosen by flag collectors, quiz fans and schools studying the Pacific.
