The Guinea-Bissau flag and the black star

Guinea-Bissau's flag has a vertical red band at the hoist bearing a black five-pointed star, with two horizontal bands of yellow over green filling the fly. The design comes from the flag of the PAIGC, the movement led by Amílcar Cabral that fought for the independence of Guinea-Bissau and Cape Verde from Portugal. Red recalls the blood shed in that struggle, yellow the sun and the country's wealth, green the forests and hope, and the black star stands for African unity, an echo of the star on Ghana's flag. Independence was declared on 24 September 1973 and recognised by Portugal the following year. Our Guinea-Bissau flag shows the star sharply on the red band.

Independence Day, cashews and the Bijagós

24 September is Independence Day. The country is one of the world's biggest growers of cashew nuts, and the Bijagós archipelago offshore is famous for its turtles, mangroves and island culture. The national football team, the Djurtus, have reached several Africa Cup of Nations finals tournaments.
