The US Virgin Islands flag: eagle, arrows and the letters V I
The flag of the United States Virgin Islands was adopted on 17 May 1921. On a white field sits a simplified golden yellow eagle taken from the Great Seal of the United States, with the US shield of stars and stripes on its breast. In one talon it holds a sprig of laurel and in the other three blue arrows, one for each of the main islands, St Croix, St Thomas and St John. On either side of the eagle are the blue letters V and I, for Virgin Islands. Our US Virgin Islands flag keeps the eagle, arrows and lettering crisp on a bright white field.
Transfer Day, carnival and the islands abroad
Transfer Day on 31 March marks the handover of the Danish West Indies to the United States in 1917, and Charlotte Amalie still shows its Danish past in its streets and forts. The St Thomas Carnival in late April and the Crucian Christmas Festival on St Croix are the big flag-waving events. In Britain the flag is bought by people with family on the islands, by sailors who have chartered in the Virgin Islands, by honeymooners and by collectors completing a set of US territory flags.
