The British Indian Ocean Territory flag

The flag of the British Indian Ocean Territory, usually shortened to BIOT, was granted in 1990. It is one of the few flags based on the Blue Ensign layout that drops the plain blue field. The Union Flag sits in the canton as usual, but the rest of the flag is filled with wavy horizontal lines of white and dark blue that represent the Indian Ocean. In the fly stands a coconut palm, and above the palm rests a gold crown. The territory’s coat of arms, which is not on the flag itself, shares the same wavy sea and palm. Our BIOT flag keeps the waves even and the palm and crown in proportion, so the design reads clearly from a distance.
