The Egyptian flag: red, white, black and the eagle

The Egypt flag is a horizontal tricolour of red, white and black with the gold Eagle of Saladin on the white band, holding a scroll with the country’s name in Arabic. The three colours are the Arab Liberation colours that came out of the 1952 revolution: red for the struggle before it, white for the bloodless way the monarchy ended, and black for the end of oppression. The eagle is the emblem associated with Saladin, the twelfth-century sultan who ruled from Cairo, and it replaced the earlier hawk of Quraish when the current flag was adopted on 4 October 1984. The Egyptian flag shares its stripes with Syria, Iraq and Yemen, so the eagle is what tells it apart. Salah, the Pharaohs and 23 July

No flag on this site has had a bigger boost from one footballer: Egyptian flags fly on the Kop and in Liverpool pubs for every Mo Salah goal, and the Pharaohs bring them out across the country for the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifying, with the World Cup 2026 Egypt team bundle covering the tournament itself. Revolution Day on 23 July is the national holiday, and the Egyptian community in London, Manchester and Glasgow, the Coptic churches and the Egyptian restaurants and shisha cafés along Edgware Road put flags and bunting up for it and for Eid. Away from the diaspora, Egypt flags are bought in numbers by primary schools for Ancient Egypt topic weeks and museum trips, by hotels and travel agents for Nile cruise and Red Sea promotions, and by anyone hosting a Cleopatra-themed party. Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and the rest of the region are in world flags.

Sizes, grades and fittings

The Egyptian flag is stocked in 20x12in for a car or a hand pole, 3ft x 2ft for a classroom wall or a short pole, 5ft x 3ft for a garden pole, a pub window or a match, and 8ft x 5ft for a restaurant front, a church hall or a flagpole. Flagtex is the woven-polyester print with brass eyelets for a tournament or a celebration; DuraFlag is the heavier knitted grade with double-stitched hems for a flag that stays out all year, with clips or a rope and toggle for the halyard.

Egypt bunting

Egypt bunting repeats the tricolour and eagle on each rectangular pennant, sewn to a tape in 3m and 9m lengths. Three metres frames a shop doorway or a classroom display, nine metres runs down a restaurant or across a hall for Revolution Day or an AFCON final, and lengths join for a street.

Hand flags and table flags
