The St Kitts and Nevis flag: two stars on a black diagonal

The flag of St Kitts and Nevis is divided by a broad black band running from the lower hoist to the upper fly, edged on both sides by narrow yellow stripes and carrying two white five-pointed stars. Above the band is a green triangle, below it a red one. Green is the fertile land, yellow the year-round sunshine, black the African heritage of the people, and red the struggle against slavery and colonialism through to independence. The two stars are usually explained as hope and liberty, though many people also see them as the two islands. The design came from a national competition won by a student, Edris Lewis, and was adopted on independence day, 19 September 1983. Independence, Sugar Mas and Kittitians in Britain

Independence Day on 19 September is the national holiday, but the biggest party is Sugar Mas, the St Kitts carnival that runs from late November through to the first days of January, with Culturama on Nevis in late July and August. Cricket fans fly the flag at West Indies matches and at Warner Park in Basseterre, which has hosted Test and T20 cricket, and the islands’ athletes, led by sprinter Kim Collins, the 2003 world 100m champion, made the flag known on the track. Large numbers of Kittitians and Nevisians came to Britain in the Windrush years, and Leicester in particular has one of the biggest Nevisian communities outside the Caribbean, with others in London, Luton and Birmingham. Their independence dances, church services and Windrush Day events are where the green, black and red is most often seen here.

Sizes, grades and fittings

Order 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft or 8ft x 5ft. The 5ft x 3ft is the standard for a pole or a carnival float, the 3ft x 2ft for a window or a wall. Flagtex is a light woven polyester at the lower price; DuraFlag is heavier knitted polyester with reinforced stitching for a flag left outside. Both have brass eyelets, and DuraFlag can have clips or rope and toggle.

St Kitts and Nevis bunting

There are two options. The standard St Kitts and Nevis bunting comes in 3m and 9m lengths, and the small rectangle bunting uses smaller pennants for a tighter space such as a bar, a classroom or a buffet table. Both are double-sided polyester, happy indoors or out.

Hand flags and table flags

St Kitts and Nevis hand flags come on wooden sticks in 9x6in and 18x12in for a carnival road or a cricket ground. The table flag is 6x4in on a base, and the large wooden table flag 18x12in for a reception or top table. Antigua, Montserrat, Anguilla and Dominica are with the world flags.
