The Albanian flag: the black eagle on red
The flag of Albania is a red field with a black two-headed eagle at its centre, one of the most recognisable national flags in Europe and one of the oldest in origin. The eagle comes from the seal of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, Skanderbeg, who led the Albanian resistance to the Ottomans in the fifteenth century, and the Albanian name for the country, Shqipëri, is popularly read as the land of the eagles. The flag was raised at Vlorë on 28 November 1912 when Ismail Qemali declared independence, and since then only the detail above the eagle has changed, from Skanderbeg’s helmet to the communist star and, from 1992, to nothing at all. The proportion is 5:7 and the eagle is drawn with raised wings and feathered legs, and on our Albania flag it is printed in solid black on a true red so the outline stays sharp at every size from 20x12in to 8ft x 5ft.
Flag Day, the Kuqezinjtë and the diaspora
Albania’s Flag Day and Independence Day fall together on 28 November, with Liberation Day the following day, and the Albanian flag is also carried by Albanian-speaking communities from Kosovo and North Macedonia at their own celebrations, which makes it one of the most widely flown flags of the Balkans. Britain has a large Albanian-speaking population, concentrated in London but present in most cities, and Albanian cafés, barbers, restaurants and community associations fly the eagle year round, with 28 November gatherings in London and Manchester. In sport the Kuqezinjtë, the Red and Blacks, qualified for Euro 2016 and Euro 2024 and took thousands of fans to each, and Albanian boxers and weightlifters keep the flag on the podium between tournaments.

What does the eagle on the Albanian flag mean?
The black double-headed eagle comes from the seal of Skanderbeg, the fifteenth-century national hero, and from the Byzantine tradition before him. Albanians call their country Shqipëri, popularly understood as the land of the eagles.
Why does the Albanian eagle have two heads?
The double-headed eagle is an old Byzantine and Balkan emblem of sovereignty, looking both east and west. Skanderbeg’s family, the Kastrioti, used it on their seal and it passed from there to the national flag.
