The twelve animals and the years they belong to

The zodiac runs on a twelve-year cycle, and the flag changes with it. Horse is 2026, Goat 2027, Monkey 2028, Rooster 2029, Dog 2030, Pig 2031, Rat 2032, Ox 2033, Tiger 2034, Rabbit 2035, Dragon 2036 and Snake 2037, and then round again. Because the set is stocked all year rather than printed for each New Year, a restaurant can buy next year's flag in advance or a school can fly the animal of the year a class was born in.

Sizes, cloth and fittings

Every design on this page is a DuraFlag: 150gsm knitted polyester with double-stitched hems, the grade for a flag that goes up on an exposed pole for the fortnight of the festival and comes out again next year. There are two sizes, the 20x12in courtesy flag at £14.99 with rope and toggle for a short pole, a boat or a doorway, and the 5ft x 3ft at £39.99 with clips for a telescopic pole or rope and toggle for a halyard. There is no Flagtex, bunting or hand-flag version of the zodiac designs; for red-and-gold decoration around them, the China flags hub has the national flag with bunting and hand flags, and plain red flags are under plain colours.

When Chinese New Year falls

The date varies with the lunar calendar and lands between 21 January and 20 February; the celebrations run for around fifteen days to the Lantern Festival, and UK parades in London, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham are usually on the nearest Sunday. The flags leave our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse the same day on orders before 2pm with free 1 to 2 day UK delivery, so there is time to order once the date is confirmed. The full DuraFlag range is under DuraFlags.

Chinese New Year flag FAQs

Which animal is 2026?

The Horse. 2027 is the Goat and 2028 the Monkey; the page lists the whole cycle.

Are these only available as DuraFlags?

Yes. The twelve zodiac designs are made in the 150gsm DuraFlag grade only, in 20x12in and 5ft x 3ft.

Clips or rope and toggle?

Clips for a telescopic or garden pole with rings; rope and toggle for a traditional halyard pole or for tying to a doorway or a balcony rail. The 20x12in size is rope and toggle.

When is Chinese New Year next year?

The date moves each year between 21 January and 20 February; check the current year's date before ordering and allow two working days for delivery.

Is there matching bunting or a hand flag?

Not for the zodiac animals. Use China bunting and hand flags from the China flags hub, or plain red and gold bunting, alongside the zodiac flag.

Can the Dragon flag be flown in a non-Dragon year?

Yes; the dragon is a symbol of luck and is used for openings, weddings and festivals in any year, so it is the one to keep in stock alongside the current animal.
