Bunting: what it is and how ours is made

Bunting is a string of small flags, or pennants, sewn to a tape and hung along a street, a fence, a ceiling or a marquee. The word comes from the lightweight worsted wool the Royal Navy used for signal flags, and the habit of dressing a street with it dates from the coronations and jubilees of the 19th century; the 1977 Silver Jubilee and the 2012 Diamond Jubilee are the reason most British streets still own a box of it. Ours is printed on weatherproof polyester, the same cloth as our Flagtex flags, so the colours do not run in the rain and a run of bunting bought for one street party comes out of the shed again for the next. Each pennant is sewn, not glued, to a strong white tape with a loop at each end for tying off, and the print goes through the cloth so the design shows on both faces.

Rectangle, triangle or giant?

Rectangle bunting shows a whole flag on each pennant and is the right choice for national flags, club colours and anything with a crest, in 3m, 5m, 9m, 12m, 18.25m and 20m lengths. Triangle bunting is the traditional fete and tea-party shape, in 5m, 12m and 20m, and suits plain colours, Union Jacks and the red, white and blue of a royal event. Giant bunting uses oversized pennants on an 18.25m tape for a hall, a high street or a car forecourt where normal bunting would look lost. A 3m length dresses a doorway or a stall front; 9m does a garden fence or a pub window; a 20m length crosses a street twice.

What people buy bunting for

Royal events and VE Day anniversaries take the Union Jack bunting and the triangle red, white and blue; St George’s Day, the Euros and the World Cup take St George bunting and the multi-nation runs of every competing flag; the Six Nations, Commonwealth Games and Olympics have their own event bunting. Pubs and fan zones hang world country bunting for a tournament, schools hang it for a culture week, and restaurants hang their own country all year. Celebration bunting covers birthdays, Christmas, Halloween and Oktoberfest, plain-colour bunting is the wedding, baby-shower and garden-party choice, and rainbow and Pride bunting dresses a parade route. County shows and village fetes take the county flag bunting, and campervans, narrowboats and beach huts take whatever makes them smile.

Hanging bunting

Tie the end loops to a fence post, a drainpipe bracket, a hook or a telescopic pole, and let the line sag a little between fixings so the wind can pass through; a straight, taut run puts all the load on the first tie. Cable ties, garden wire or a few turns of string around a lamp post hold the middle of a long run. Outdoors the polyester lasts a season of weather; indoors it lasts for years. Everything is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, same day on orders placed before 2pm, so a street party ordered on Thursday has its bunting by Saturday.

Bunting FAQs

How much bunting do I need for a street party?

Measure the distance between the fixing points and add a fifth for sag. A typical terraced street of 30m needs three 20m lengths criss-crossed, or 9m lengths between lamp posts; a garden fence of 9m takes one 9m length.

Is your bunting waterproof?

It is printed on weatherproof polyester, so rain does not run the colours and it dries quickly. Bring it in for storage over winter and it will last for years of parties.

What is the difference between triangle and rectangle bunting?

Rectangle pennants show a complete flag or design on each piece, so they are used for national flags and crests. Triangle pennants are the traditional fete shape and suit plain colours and simple designs like the Union Jack or St George cross.

How big are the pennants on giant bunting?

Giant bunting uses pennants several times the area of standard bunting on an 18.25m tape, so it reads from across a street or a car park. It is sold for high streets, halls, forecourts and large marquees.

Can I get bunting in my country’s flag?

Almost certainly. Every country in our world flag range has matching bunting, along with all the home nations, Irish and British county flags, Pride flags and the main sporting and celebration themes.

Do you sell plain-colour bunting for a wedding?

Yes. The plain-colour range has single-colour bunting in white, black, red, blue, green, yellow, orange, pink and purple, and the red, white and blue triangle bunting is the royal-event classic.

How quickly can bunting arrive?

Every length is held in UK stock. Order before 2pm and it is dispatched the same day, with free 1–2 day delivery across the UK.
