Poland flags: white over red, with or without the eagle

The Polish flag is two horizontal bands, white above red, in a 5:8 proportion. The colours come from the oldest Polish emblem, the white eagle on a red shield, and were declared the national colours by the Sejm on 7 February 1831; the plain bicolour was adopted by the reborn republic on 1 August 1919 and confirmed by the 1980 Act on the coat of arms, colours and anthem, which also set the present shades. Our Poland flag has white on top — hanging it red-up is the commonest mistake with this flag and turns it into Indonesia or Monaco — in the warm vermilion red of the 1980 specification rather than a dark maroon.

Poland has two national flags. The plain bicolour is for everyone; the Poland crest flag, white over red with the crowned white eagle on the upper band, is the state flag with coat of arms used by Polish embassies, airports, ships and Poles abroad, and it is the version many Polish organisations in Britain prefer because it says Poland at a glance. Independence Day, Flag Day and the Polish calendar in Britain

Poland’s National Independence Day on 11 November, marking the restoration of the state in 1918, is when Polish Saturday schools, parishes and Polish clubs across Britain fly the flag and hold concerts and marches; Flag Day on 2 May and Constitution Day on 3 May, commemorating the constitution of 1791, bring a second peak each spring. In between, Britain’s large Polish community buys flags for christenings and weddings, Polish shops and restaurants, Armed Forces Day on 15 August and the Polish football and volleyball teams’ tournaments.

The Poland crest Nylon flag is the mid grade for the eagle version, with a tighter weave and quadruple-stitched fly end, and the Poland DuraFlag and Poland crest DuraFlag are the ones for a pole outside a Polish church, consulate or community centre: 150gsm knitted polyester, double-stitched, reinforced header and UV-fast inks in 3x2, 5x3 and 8x5ft.
