The Venezuelan flag: Miranda’s tricolour and the arc of stars
The Venezuela flag is a horizontal tricolour of yellow, blue and red with an arc of eight white stars in the centre of the blue band. The colours go back to Francisco de Miranda, who raised the yellow, blue and red in 1806 and explained them as the gold of the New World separated by the blue of the ocean from the red of bloody Spain; Colombia and Ecuador share them for the same reason, as the three states that came out of Gran Colombia. The stars were added for the seven provinces that signed the declaration of independence in 1811, and the eighth, for Guayana, was added on 12 March 2006 under the decree that also turned the horse on the coat of arms to gallop to the left. We stock the current Venezuela 8 stars flag, the civil flag flown by most people, and the Venezuela (Crest) flag with the coat of arms in the canton, which is the state flag used by government offices and embassies, both in 20x12in, 3ft x 2ft, 5ft x 3ft and 8ft x 5ft. The Venezuela 7 stars Old flag is the pre-2006 version in 5ft x 3ft, still flown by some Venezuelans abroad.
5 July, the Vinotinto and Venezuelans in the UK
Independence Day on 5 July and the Declaration of 19 April are the two national flag days, with Flag Day itself on 3 August, and the Venezuelan community in London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Birmingham marks them at embassy receptions, community picnics and the arepa bars and cafés that have opened across the country in the last decade. The Vinotinto, the national football team, draws flags for Copa América and World Cup qualifiers, baseball fans follow the winter league and the major-league Venezuelans, and the Christmas season brings gaitas, hallacas and a flag on the wall from early December. Venezuelan restaurants keep a table flag on the counter alongside the Colombian one.
Which size Venezuela flag?
5ft x 3ft is the size for a café front, a garden pole, a hall or a party; 3ft x 2ft for a bedroom, a stall or a short pole; 8ft x 5ft for an embassy flagpole or a stage; 20x12in for a car window or a hand pole. Each has a sewn header and brass eyelets, with clips or a rope and toggle on the DuraFlag grade.
Flagtex or DuraFlag?
Flagtex is the printed woven polyester at £6.99 for a 5ft x 3ft, right for a match, a national day or a party. DuraFlag is the 150gsm knitted polyester with double-stitched hems and a reinforced header for a flag that stays on a pole outside a restaurant or a consulate all year. Both grades are stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse within the same working day on orders before 2pm.
Venezuela bunting
Venezuela 8 stars bunting and Venezuela crest bunting both come on rectangular pennants in 3m and 9m lengths on weatherproof polyester sewn to a tape. 3m frames a doorway or an arepa counter; 9m runs the length of a café or a hall for 5 July or a Copa América night.
Hand flags and table flags
Venezuela 8 stars hand flags and crest hand flags on wooden sticks come in 9x6in and 18x12in for the stadium and the parade. The Venezuela table flag and the crest table flag with base are the 6x4in desk flags, with wooden and satin table flags in both designs for a reception or an embassy desk. Colombia flags have their own page, and Ecuador, Brazil and the rest of South America are under world flags.
Venezuela flag FAQs
Why does the Venezuela flag have eight stars?
Seven stars were added in 1817 for the seven provinces that declared independence in 1811. The eighth, for the province of Guayana, was added in March 2006, fulfilling a decree Bolívar had issued in 1817.
What is the difference between the Venezuela flag and the crest flag?
The plain tricolour with eight stars is the civil flag flown by the public. The crest flag adds the coat of arms in the top corner by the hoist and is the state flag used by government buildings, embassies and the armed forces.
Why do Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador have the same colours?
All three were part of Gran Colombia and inherited Francisco de Miranda’s yellow, blue and red of 1806. Venezuela’s has equal bands and stars; Colombia’s has a double-width yellow band; Ecuador’s adds its coat of arms.
Is the seven-star flag still used?
It was replaced in 2006, but it is still flown by some Venezuelans at home and abroad. We stock it in 5ft x 3ft as the Venezuela 7 stars Old flag.
When is Venezuela’s Independence Day?
5 July, the date of the 1811 declaration. 19 April marks the start of the independence movement in 1810, and Flag Day is 3 August.
What size Venezuela flag for a telescopic pole?
5ft x 3ft on a 6m telescopic or garden pole; 8ft x 5ft on a fixed pole of 25ft or more; 3ft x 2ft on a short pole or a hand pole.
