The Pitcairn Islands flag: Bounty anchor and wheelbarrow

Pitcairn’s flag, adopted in 1984, is a Blue Ensign with the islands’ coat of arms in the fly. The shield is green and blue, the green for the island rising from the blue Pacific, and on it are a yellow anchor and a Bible, both relics of HMS Bounty, whose mutineers settled on Pitcairn with their Tahitian companions in 1790. Above the shield is a crest that no other flag can match: a Pitcairn wheelbarrow, the islanders’ traditional means of carrying goods up from the landing, with a sprig of the miro plant, whose wood is carved into souvenirs. Bounty Day and a tiny community

Pitcairn is one of the UK’s overseas territories and one of the least populated places on earth, with around forty residents in Adamstown. Bounty Day on 23 January marks the burning of the ship in 1790, with a model of the Bounty set alight in Bounty Bay. The flag is bought by descendants of the mutineers in Norfolk Island, New Zealand and Britain, by readers of the Bounty story, by cruise and yacht visitors, and by collectors of overseas territory flags.
