The Tuvalu flag: nine stars on light blue

Tuvalu’s flag is a light blue ensign with the Union Flag in the canton and nine gold five-pointed stars spread across the fly. The stars are placed to match the positions of the nation’s nine islands and atolls on a map, with north at the hoist side, so the flag is in effect a chart of the country. The name Tuvalu means eight standing together, from the eight islands that were traditionally inhabited; the ninth star is Niulakita, settled later. The flag was adopted at independence on 1 October 1978. For a short period from 1995 a design without the Union Flag was used, before the original was restored in 1997. Independence Day on 1 October is celebrated with fatele dancing, feasts and canoe races in Funafuti, the capital atoll. Tuvalu is one of the smallest countries in the world, with around 11,000 people, and is also known to internet users for its .tv domain. Tuvaluan families in New Zealand, Fiji and the UK fly the flag for national days, church events and Pacific festivals, and collectors like the way it doubles as a map.
