Tuvalu Flag

Nine gold stars, laid out as the islands sit on a map, are scattered across the fly of Tuvalu's light blue ensign, with the Union Flag in the canton.

The name Tuvalu means eight standing together, from the eight islands traditionally inhabited; the ninth star is Niulakita, settled later. The flag was adopted at independence in 1978, briefly replaced in 1995 and restored in 1997.

It is flown for Independence Day on 1 October, at Pacific and Commonwealth events and in model United Nations sessions.
