Choosing a flag pole
The right flagpole depends on where it is going and how long it is staying up. For a garden, a campsite, a festival pitch or a sports pavilion the telescopic flag pole is the one most people want: it extends section by section from a carry length to anywhere between 3m and 12m, goes up in minutes with no digging and no concrete, and collapses back down for the shed or the car boot. Add a ground stake and it stands on grass or gravel; take it down between events and it lasts for years. A 4m or 6m pole suits a back garden and a 5ft x 3ft flag, 8m to 10m is the size for a club, a showground or a caravan park, and 12m is for a business frontage where the flag has to be seen from the road. For a permanent install the 4.5m aluminium and fibreglass flagpole and the 2.8m multi-section pole go into a ground sleeve, and the heavy-duty six-section pole is the budget option for a fixed display.
Wall-mounted poles for the front of the house
Where there is no lawn, or for a pub, a shop or a terraced house, the aluminium flag pole and wall bracket kit is the answer: a lightweight telescopic pole in 6ft or 8ft with a gold ball cap, sliding clips for any flag up to 5ft x 3ft and a 180-degree adjustable bracket with fixings included, so the pole can sit out horizontally, at 45 degrees or straight up. The pole lifts out of the bracket for security or for a change of flag, and the wall bracket on its own is there for a second mounting point or a replacement.
Hand-held poles for the crowd
For a parade, a match or a demonstration the 6ft hand-held telescopic flagpole has a rubber grip and two clips so a 5ft x 3ft or 3ft x 2ft flag can be fixed in seconds and the whole thing telescopes down to go in a bag; the 1.2m hand-held pole is the child-sized and car-window version, and a 24-pack of the 6ft pole is stocked for supporters’ clubs and event organisers.
Which flag for which pole?
A 5ft x 3ft flag is the standard for a telescopic pole up to 6m, a wall-mounted pole and a hand-held pole. Go to 8ft x 5ft on a 10m or 12m telescopic pole or a fixed pole of 25ft, and keep to 3ft x 2ft on the 2.8m pole or a short hand pole. Our Flagtex and DuraFlag flags all come with eyelets, and the DuraFlag grade can be ordered with rope and toggle or clips to suit the pole’s fittings; every pole on this page is stocked in and dispatched from our Stoke-on-Trent warehouse, same day on orders placed before 2pm.
Flag pole FAQs
Do I need planning permission for a flagpole in the UK?
In England the flag of any country, the Commonwealth, the EU or the UN, a county or regional flag and the Pride flag can be flown from a single flagpole without advertisement consent, and a vertical pole in your own garden is normally fine; listed-building consent may still be needed to fix a bracket to a listed building, and flags that advertise a business are controlled. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have similar but separate rules, so check with the council if in doubt.
How tall a flag pole do I need for a 5ft x 3ft flag?
A 4m to 6m telescopic pole is ideal; the flag then flies clear of fences and hedges without looking lost. On a 10m or 12m pole move up to an 8ft x 5ft flag.
Does the telescopic flag pole need concrete?
No. It stands in a ground stake pushed or hammered into lawn or soft ground, or in a ground sleeve for a permanent spot. There is no digging and it comes down again in minutes.
How do I fix a flag pole to a wall?
Use the aluminium pole and wall bracket kit. The bracket screws to brick or timber with the fixings supplied and adjusts through 180 degrees, so the pole can be set horizontal, at an angle or vertical; the pole lifts out whenever you want it off the wall.
Can a telescopic flag pole stay up in wind?
Yes in normal British weather, with the stake firmly in and the sections locked. In a gale, drop the pole a section or two or take it down, as you would with any garden pole, and use a smaller flag on exposed sites.
Which pole for a football match or a parade?
The 6ft hand-held telescopic pole with a 5ft x 3ft flag. It has a rubber grip and two clips, collapses to fit a bag, and most grounds allow it where a rigid pole is banned; check the stadium’s rules on pole length before you go.
