The Wallis and Futuna flag: tricolour and white saltire

The flag of Wallis and Futuna is a red field with the French tricolour, edged in white, in the upper hoist corner. In the centre of the fly is a white pattern made of four isosceles triangles meeting at their points, forming a saltire inside an imaginary square. The design comes from the old flag of the kingdom of Uvea on Wallis, where the red and white pattern had been flown since the nineteenth century, and the tricolour was added to show the islands’ place within the French Republic. Three kingdoms and a rugby nursery

Wallis and Futuna is a French overseas collectivity of about 11,000 people in the South Pacific, between Fiji and Samoa. Alongside the French administration it keeps three customary kingdoms: Uvea on Wallis, and Sigave and Alo on Futuna. Territory Day on 29 July is the main festival, with dancing, canoe races and feasts of kava and roast pig.
