The Togo flag: five stripes and a white star

Togo’s flag was adopted on 27 April 1960, the day the country became independent, and was designed by the Togolese artist Paul Ahyi. It has five horizontal stripes, alternating green and yellow, with green at the top and bottom, and a red square canton in the upper hoist bearing a white five-pointed star. The five stripes represent the country’s regions; the green stands for hope and agriculture, the yellow for faith in hard work and the nation’s mineral wealth, the red for the love and sacrifice of its people, and the white star for life, purity and peace. Green, yellow and red are also the Pan-African colours shared with many neighbours. Our Togo flag has the canton spanning the top three stripes, exactly as in the official design.

Independence Day, Les Éperviers and Togolese in Britain

Independence Day on 27 April is the main national holiday, celebrated with parades in Lomé and parties among Togolese families in London and other British cities. The national football team, Les Éperviers (the Sparrowhawks), reached the World Cup in 2006, and Emmanuel Adebayor, the country’s most famous player, starred for Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham, so the flag is familiar to many Premier League fans. It also appears at Africa Cup of Nations watch parties and church celebrations.
